Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract your audience?

We attracted our audience by how we actually filmed and used editing in our thriller, for example the fact that it is a thriller alone draws an audience in as a wide range of people enjoy thrillers due to how varied they are; they contain action, fights, good music, romance, comedy, suspense, horror and a allot more.

"It makes me scared"-Enya 2015

Our "audience" stated that they would like to watch on if this were a real film and shortly after showing these two allot of people in our school were talking about our work.

Our opening holds peoples attention due to the editing and sound, the sound adds a good ambiance to the work and helps build suspense with its timing the camera work was also very well done, especially the "dealing scene" which was filmed from a low angle the whole sense of enigma surrounding that scene is half of the reason why people wanted to keep watching, this is what a lot of thriller movies actually use and since it has worked for them, we used it to draw viewers in as well.

What kind of Media Institution might distribute your media product and why?

Thus question can be split into two parts, the first looks at our product as though it were really going to be made into a film and the second is what is going to happen in reality.

1: if our film were really to be produced then first of all there would be no chance of a major film studio distributing it as this is our first film and there is no guarantee of a profit let alone a big one, it is more likely that an independent studio such as Film 4, BBC or the microwave scheme will distribute it, this is because we are a small group of british film makers.

Even if we were to get this it is still difficult to get it distributed as we would have to look at the different types of distribution; the most likely for us would be a straight to dvd release where there are no prints made for the film and it is shipped of straight to stores where people can buy it, but only if they see it and take a liking to it.
Above this is a simultaneous release where the film is shipped of as DVD's but at the same time it is released on demand and a few prints are sent out to specific cinemas where the film is more likely to be noticed.
Platform release is when a small number of prints are made and shipped out to areas with more diversity where there will be more viewers, this would be the highest our film got on this list.
Of course above this is wide release where the film is distributed over a massive area, even world wide with a lot of prints made or even sent digitally due to the range of where it will be going.

2: In reality we have no chance of getting these types of distribution as we haven't even made a finished film, all we have are a few minutes of an opening.

Therefore it is up to us to distribute our own film, we can do this in a few ways though they are all similar, first of all we can post it on youtube and after that we just have to advertise it; this can be done through word of mouth or through social media such as Facebook or Twitter.

Designing Title Sequence

Here i am going to show the creation of our title sequence and what it is.
This is the studio ident, this tells the viewer which studio made the film, examples are things like the Walt Disney studios ident being Steamboat Willie.
Here we have the name alone of the studio in a more mature manner, showing that they are presenting the film having it here also means it is easily visible for anyone who missed it the first time.
When it comes to title sequences the last name to appear MUST ALWAYS BE THE DIRECTOR!

Shooting Schedule

this is our shooting schedule, showing when we filmed and what we filmed for example we filmed another shot of michal on day two as we had to go back and change some things we were un happy with.As you can see we spent all of our time around St. Pauls as it has a big shopping centre for dramatic overviews of the city and it also has some back alleys for the "shady" scenes.

Treatment

here is the treatment for our thriller opening it shows our roles and our tagline and synopsis as though this were an actual film that was being produced, i actually rather like the synopsis that i have created for this film, i would definitely go to see this movie.

Styles of Editing

We have just learnt about different types of editing, and looked at films and film directors who have looked at different ways to edit their films.

The movement from one shot to the next is called a transitionThere are many forms of this

Straight Cut: This is the most common form of transition, and isn't as noticeable as others. It happens when one shot moves to the next one without attracting the audience's attention.

Dissolves: This transition involves fading one shot off the screen while another shot is fading in. The audience will be able to see both shots on the screen. It is used if the director wants to show a connection.

Fades: This is a darkening or lightening of an image until it becomes black or white. It is used to indicate the end of a particular section of time. Fading transitions can also be used to show the passing of time in a film.

Wipes: One image is pushed off the screen by another.Images can be pushed left or right, and it is more common for the image to be pushed off the left-hand side as this movement is more associated with the sense of time moving forward. It is used to signal a movement between different locations within the same time frame.

Jump Cut: Jump cuts are the most effective way to get the audience's attention due to how quick and sudden they are - it draws them in within the space of a second. This occurs by breaking the continuity editing. It appears as if a section of the sequence has been removed.

Graphic Match: The film maker can choose to place shots in a certain order so as to create a smooth, visual transfer from one frame to the next. When two consecutive shots are matched in terms of the way they look, this is called a graphic match.

Montage theory:

The Kuleshov Effect is a film editing effect demonstrated by Soviet filmmaker lev kuleshov in the 1910s and 1920s. It is a mental phenomenon by which viewers derive more meaning from the interaction of two sequential shots than from a single shot in isolation.

The different images appear to change the expression on his face but in reality it is the same face used over and over, this can be used in filming to trick people into thinking different things as both images never appear on the screen together. you could act as though he was looking at one thing when in reality he was looking at something else.

Screening: Conspiracy+Audience feed back

Here Carly took our opening and showed it to two of her friends and asked if they would give it some feedback, to see what they liked/disliked and what they did and didn't enjoy, though I'm not overly sure that they took it seriously enough.

First Draft

Here is the first draft for our thriller it contains most of the key editing parts such as the titles along with the name of the thriller, however we need to change the names so it is not just the four of us repeated. it contains our names and the details needed for the coursework.
it is missing our ident however, but this is okay as it is only a draft.

past student work

The Catalyst:
In my opinion this is a very well made thriller it creates a lot of suspense and mystery with the killer who takes out what appears to be some sort of deal going down between two men, the man who escapes runs of to his getaway vehicle but finds that his driver is dead, it is then that we see the killer strangle the man and then tells a kid in the backseat to "shhhh" he then gets out of the car and picks up whatever the item was for the deal. i think that the filming of this has been taken into consideration a lot, my only issue is that the killer goes from a house in a town to out in a park in a manner of seconds, i think this is a big issue with continuity.

Power Cut:
This thriller on the other hand is not as good, it is unclear as to what exactly is happening and the only clue we get is the title :power cut, due to it being in black and white, we cannot really see the lights go off or a change in light levels, the filming is also rather shaky, another issue is the rise-en-scene, we can see it is in a school and this ruins the entire feel, it looks as though they should be in an office.

Hunter: this thriller has clearly been filmed in a school however it takes advantage of that by purposely acknowledging it and seeing the characters in it, for example we see the "detective" and the "teacher" this works very well as they have used miss-en-scen to correctly portray their parts, the decretive is wearing a trench coat and carries a note book, whilst the teacher is wearing usual PE gear and uses a baseball bat to knock out or kill the detective, the camera work and editing is also very professional.

Preliminary with evaluation

Here is our preliminary complete with warts and all:

now i hope when watching this you understand that it is in no means a good piece of work, it was created for the sole purpose of showing that we kind of know what we are doing behind the camera as clearly we don't know how to act in front of one, however i digress, this piece of work shows how we can use different camera work and editing for several effects, the close ups help show the expression on michals face as seen in the thumbnail and the medium shots help show body language, we have also used eyeliner match with the clock and michal to show that he is watching the time as sam is late
